Port Blair, May 29: India’s largest offshore Patrolling Vessel (OPV) INS Saryu has joined hte flotilla of Andaman and Nicobar command today. The Commander in Chief, Air Marshall P K Roy welcomed the ship at the impressive ceremony held at Naval Jetty at Port Blair this morning.
Speaking on the occasion, Air Marshall P K Roy called upon the crew members to maintain high standards of professional competence and operational readiness to excel in executing the challenging tasks. He hoped that the induction of the vessel integrated with advanced sensors and modern navigation system, will be of immense helpful in facing the challenges posed by the increasing level of poachers’ movements in the region. He categorically stated that the command is fully prepared to meet out any challenges and confront even the mightiest intruders in to our territory.
Earlier, he handed over the flag of the command to the commanding officer of the vessel, Commander Amanpreet Singh to mark the formal induction of the ship in to the command. He also greeted all the crew members and their families on the occasion.
The latest addition to the Naval component of the command, INS Saryu has been indigenously built and designed by Goa Ship Yard. It is powered by twin diesel engines to deliver a maximum speed of 25 knots and equipped with state of the art navigation, communication and electronic warfare systems, besides a helicopter to enhance its maritime capabilities.
Interacting with the media on the sidelines of the function, Air Marshall P K Roy said the vessel has undergone several test runs and trials in various naval stations during the last four months and came out successfully. He also revealed that INS Saryu is the first one among the four offshore vessels indigenously constructed by the Goa Ship Yard for the Indian Navy.
With the induction of the ship, the ocean surveillance, anti poaching operations and maritime capabilities of the command will get enhanced tremendously.
The ship was earlier commissioned in to Indian Navy by Air Marshall P K Roy at Goa on 21st January last. (PIB)
