Sri Vijaya Puram, Dec 02: The Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, has recently announced the national ranking of police stations under its annual “Best Police Stations” evaluation scheme in the recently concluded DGP/IGP Conference at IIM Raipur. Police Station Pahargaon, South Andaman District has achieved a remarkable distinction by securing the 2nd Rank at the All-India level in this prestigious assessment. This recognition is the result of a rigorous, objective, and multi-layered evaluation process conducted by the Ministry, using standardized national indicators.
The assessment covers several critical areas, including crime prevention and detection—such as crimes against women, crimes against weaker sections, property offences, missing and unidentified persons, and the quality and timeliness of investigations. It also evaluates FIR disposal and charge-sheeting efficiency. Service delivery and public-friendliness are key factors, with criteria like accessibility and responsiveness of police personnel, their behavior and discipline, ease of registering complaints, and independently collected citizen feedback. Infrastructure and station management are assessed through cleanliness, maintenance, public facilities, security arrangements, condition of lockups and record rooms, communication facilities, and overall safety standards. Additionally, digital policing and record management are considered, focusing on proper documentation, use of technology, and mechanisms for accountability and transparency.
The achievement of 2nd Rank by Police Station Pahargaon is attributed to the consistent hard work, professional integrity, disciplined functioning, and community-oriented policing demonstrated by its officers and staff. The police station has taken strong action against drug peddling and theft cases. Notably, all property crime cases of the Police Station have been solved. Also, multiple casas have been registered under NDPS Act against Ganja, Methamphatamine and psychotropic drug peddlers.
Further, the PS has created dedicated room for Women and Child complainants to provide a friendly environment where vulnerable section of society can interact with Police. The Police Station has dedicated Juvenile Welfare Officer; Women Help Desk and has deployed Sub Inspector ranked officers as ‘School Officers’ where they monitor any illegal activities that may take place near schools. Further, it also has a dedicated Coastal security officer to interact with fishing community and carry out coastal security patrolling through PMF boats.
This recognition is especially significant as the evaluation places police stations from small towns, rural areas, urban centers and Union Territories on the same competitive platform. Achieving the 2nd position among thousands of police stations across India demonstrates that high-quality policing is driven by discipline, leadership, and commitment, rather than size or resources.
On this occasion, the DGP, A&N Police, Mr. Hargobinder Singh Dhaliwal, IPS, stated, “Being ranked 2nd nationally is a proud moment for the Andaman & Nicobar Police. This achievement reaffirms our belief that effective policing is built on community trust, strong leadership and the tireless efforts of our officers on the ground.”
