Baratang, Oct. 18: In a major step towards resolving the long-pending water crisis in Baratang Island, a second water pump with an engine has been successfully installed at Shankar Nallah Dam, bringing great relief and hope to the residents of the region.
The installation of the new pump was carried out on October 17 and 18, marking a significant achievement in addressing the decades-old drinking water shortage faced by the islanders. The work gained momentum following a strike led by Zilla Parishad Member, Mr. Alager Swami, who has been actively advocating for a permanent solution to the water scarcity issue in Baratang.
Speaking to the media, locals expressed happiness and gratitude towards Mr. Alager Swami for his persistent efforts. “Now with two new pumps and engines, the water supply problem will be solved to a great extent for most of the year,” said a resident of Adazig village.
It may be recalled that the first pump was installed a few months ago, marking the beginning of progress in the long-standing issue. Mr. Swami personally monitored the installation process of the second pump from morning till evening, ensuring that the work was completed efficiently.
Acknowledging the contribution of officials, Mr. Swami extended heartfelt thanks to the APWD team, including Chief Engineer Pirjeet Rekh, Superintendent Engineer Taj Bahadur, Executive Engineer Denis, Assistant Engineer Faiz Ali, and Junior Engineer Akbar for their prompt and coordinated efforts.
Mr. Swami has further demanded that Shankar Nallah be cleaned immediately to maintain the water quality and ensure uninterrupted supply to the villagers. With this new setup in place, residents are hopeful that clean and sufficient water will now be available throughout most of the year.
