Nicobar District, Sept. 28: World Rabies Day was observed with great enthusiasm in Nicobar District, emphasizing the theme of raising awareness on rabies prevention and responsible pet ownership. The program was graced by Mr. Amit Kale, Deputy Commissioner, Nicobar District, as the Chief Guest, and Mr. Martin Luther, Secretary, Tribal Council, as the Guest of Honour.
The celebration began with a vibrant nukka natak (street play) performed by the students of Industrial Training Institute (ITI), which conveyed the importance of timely vaccination and preventive measures against rabies.
To strengthen the awareness drive, Dr. Baljit Kaur, Senior Veterinary Officer, and Dr. Anwar Moosa, Chief Medical Officer, delivered informative talks on rabies transmission & prevention.
The event witnessed active participation from different sections of society, including 79 trainees from the Home Guard, officials from various departments, ITI students, school students, and pet owners who brought along their pets to avail of the free vaccination services.
The Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services (AH&VS) provided free anti-rabies vaccines, while additional support came from Pet’s Panacea, who sponsored part of the vaccine supply. To encourage responsible pet care, vaccinated pets were gifted free treats and shampoo kits, generously sponsored by Pet Shop, Phoenix Bay.
As a unique initiative, six students from ITI were conferred the title of “Guardians for the Voiceless”, acknowledging their role in spreading awareness and standing up for animal welfare.
