Sri Vijaya Puram, Aug. 14: Even as the Islands have been lashed by heavy rain for the past two days — and showers are expected tomorrow as well — preparations for the 79th Independence Day celebrations are in full swing, with no shortage of patriotic fervour.
The main function will be held tomorrow at the historic Netaji Stadium, where the Lt. Governor of A&N Islands and Vice Chairman of the Islands Development Agency, Admiral D K Joshi, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, NM, VSM (Retd.), will hoist the National Tricolour at 9:14 AM. Following the flag hoisting, the Lt. Governor will inspect the Guard of Honour, present Medals and Gallantry Awards, and distribute Commendation Certificates. He will then address the gathering, with the ceremony concluding to the strains of the National Anthem.
Prior to the main event at Netaji Stadium, the Lt. Governor will visit the National Memorial Cellular Jail to place a wreath at the Martyrs’ Column and hoist the National Flag within the Jail premises.
Despite the relentless downpour, the mood across the Islands remains spirited, as residents prepare to celebrate the nation’s independence with pride, unity, and enthusiasm.
