
Sri Vijayapuram, July 22:The Pencak Silat team from Andaman and Nicobar Islands has made history with a remarkable performance at the 6th South Zone Pencak Silat Championship held at Trichy, Tamil Nadu on July 19 and 20, 2025. The team, comprising 41 participants, returned with 40 medals, showcasing their exceptional skills, dedication, and discipline in the field of martial arts.
The team bagged 14 gold, 14 silver, and 12 bronze medals in the championship, marking one of the best performances ever by the Union Territory at the regional level. Participants ranged from as young as five years old to senior-level athletes, all of whom demonstrated extraordinary determination and sportsmanship. The achievement reflects the rising standard and growing popularity of martial arts among the youth of the islands.
This unprecedented success was achieved under the able leadership and mentorship of Mr M S Murugan, President of the Pencak Silat Association of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, who is also a mind and fitness master trainer and a former sub-inspector with A and N Police IRBn. He was joined by Mr Logarjun M, National Coach and a senior player known for his dynamic and inspiring training methods. Several officials including the General Secretary of PSAANI Mr T Anil Kumar also participated in official capacities during the tournament.
The Association attributed this success to the continuous support of dedicated parents, committed officials, and the unwavering spirit of the athletes. This milestone has not only brought pride to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands but has also strengthened the territory’s position as an emerging force in martial arts at the regional level.
Upon the team’s return to Port Blair, they were warmly welcomed at Veer Savarkar International Airport by several prominent community members. Mr Azizur Rahman, State President of Atal Foundation and Councillor of Ward Number 6 in Sri Vijayapuram Municipal Council, extended his heartfelt congratulations and motivational words to the team. Councillor Vetrivel of Ward Number 19 and his brother Mr Sakthivel also met the athletes and appreciated their efforts. Other members of the community were present to encourage the team.
The Pencak Silat Association of Andaman and Nicobar Islands expressed its gratitude to all who contributed to the team’s success and reiterated its commitment to further promoting martial arts in the Union Territory. The achievement stands as a proud moment for the islands and a shining example of what focused effort, teamwork, and community support can accomplish.
