Sri Vijaya Puram, July 17: A Daily Rated Mazdoor (DRM) of the Electricity Department, Mr. Surjeet Das, sustained serious injuries after falling from an old and rusted electric pole while carrying out maintenance work in the Calicut area.
According to eyewitnesses and sources, Mr. Surjeet Das, a DRM and not a lineman, began his ascent using a ladder when the pole began to tilt. Attempting to save himself, he jumped, but sustained a major fracture in his leg. He is currently under medical care and is unable to resume work.
Family members say Mr. Surjeet is the sole earning member of his family, and with no one else to support them and mounting medical expenses, they are seeking urgent assistance from the administration.
Mr. Peddy Raju, President of the Andaman and Nicobar Vidyut Shramik Sangha (ANVSS), visited the injured DRM in the hospital.
Later, speaking to Andaman Sheekha Daily, he said, “There are provisions for compensatory appointments in such cases. The administration must offer Surjeet appropriate financial aid and a job as per norms.”
He also pointed out that several posts remain vacant in the department for such accident victims and also for the kin of staff who die while on duty. “We have written several letters in this regard,” he said.
