Sri Vijaya Puram, Jun 11: Mr. Prakash Adhikari, Adhyaksh, Zilla Parishad South Andaman, called on the Union Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Mr. Shantanu Thakur, during the tour of Minister of state to Sri Vijaya Puram to discuss critical issues related to cargo transportation affecting the islanders of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
During the meeting, Mr. Adhikari highlighted the persistent difficulties faced by residents of remote islands such as Campbell Bay, Little Andaman, Shaheed Dweep, and Swaraj Dweep in transporting essential cargo and the high cost of transportation that results in increase in cost of reaching the materials. He requested introduction of additional government-operated cargo vessels in the inter-island sector to ensure consistent and reliable service and competitive freight charges.
The Adhyaksh also drew attention to the significantly high cost of cargo transportation between mainland ports and Sri Vijaya Puram, which results in increased prices for essential commodities and perishables imported from the mainland. Additionally, he expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of port infrastructure in these islands and urged the Hon’ble Minister to issue necessary directions for timely repair and maintenance by the concerned agencies, requesting further for urgent repair to the Bambooflat ferry Jetty.
The Minister gave a patient hearing to the issues raised and assured the Adhyaksh of the Ministry’s commitment to improving cargo movement in the inter-island sector at the earliest. He mentioned that all possible measures, including exploring the feasibility of operating cargo ships under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model in the inter-island sector, would be considered to address the situation.
To facilitate informed decision-making, the Minister requested detailed data on cargo vessels currently operating in both inter-island and mainland sectors—covering both government and private operators, including cargo load capacities, frequency, and freight rates.
The meeting concluded with an assurance of coordinated action to enhance maritime connectivity and ease logistical challenges for the island communities.
