Mayabunder, Jan 29: Former Pramukh of Mayabunder, Abdul Siddique, along with a delegation, met with Smti. Nandini Maharaj (IAS), Deputy Commissioner of North and Middle Andaman, to discuss a range of pressing issues affecting the local community. The meeting, held earlier today, focused on improving healthcare facilities, infrastructure, and connectivity in Mayabunder and surrounding areas.
Key concerns raised during the meeting included the urgent need for specialist doctors at Dr. R.P. District Hospital, Mayabunder. Delegates emphasized the financial strain placed on patients, particularly those from economically weaker sections, due to frequent referrals to G.B. Pant Hospital in Port Blair. They highlighted the significant costs associated with treatment and extended stays in Port Blair, urging the administration to address the specialist shortage.
The delegation also stressed the need for a functional mortuary van in Mayabunder, citing the heavy expenses incurred by families who are currently forced to hire private vehicles for transporting deceased loved ones. Furthermore, the development of a playground on allotted land at Pokadera was discussed, with the aim of providing recreational opportunities for local youth and the wider community.
Connectivity issues were also high on the agenda. The delegation called for improved mobile network and internet services within Dr. R.P. Hospital, Mayabunder, pointing out the communication difficulties faced by inpatients, especially those without family members present. This issue was also highlighted as crucial for government officials stationed away from their families.
The resumption of M.V. Nalanda and M.V. Sindhu ferry services connecting Mayabunder and Diglipur with Port Blair was also raised. Finally, the delegation requested the installation of an ATM in Mohanpur village to serve the needs of residents in Mohanpur and neighboring villages.
The Deputy Commissioner of N & M Andaman reportedly listened attentively to the concerns raised and assured the delegation that she would work towards finding effective solutions. Mr. Siddique expressed his gratitude to the Deputy Commissioner for her time and commitment to addressing the issues raised on behalf of the people of Mayabunder.
