Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct 20: The A&N State Sub Junior (U15) Chess Championship 2024 commenced this morning at the PBMC Community Hall, Dairy Farm, Port Blair, amidst much enthusiasm and excitement. The event was inaugurated by Mrs. Jaya Sivasankar, Principal of Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya, Port Blair, who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. She made the ceremonial move on the top board, officially marking the beginning of the championship in presence of Mr. V.K. Najib Siddique, proprietor of SIDZERN and the sponsor of the event adding significance to the occasion.
In her address to the gathering, the chief guest emphasized the significance of chess in developing critical thinking, concentration, and problem-solving skills among young minds. She further highlighted the achievements of Indian chess players on the global stage, noting that they are consistently bringing glory to the country. She encouraged the young participants to follow in their footsteps and strive for excellence.
Around 150 young chess players are participating in the championship which serves as a crucial selection event for the upcoming 49th National Sub Junior Chess Championship, scheduled to be held in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, from November 2nd to 11th, 2024. The top four players from both the Boys’ and Girls’ categories will be selected to represent the Andaman & Nicobar Islands at the Nationals.
