Port Blair, July 29: The Bijli Kaamgar Union (BKU), affiliated with the CITU, has formally requested the Deputy Commissioner of North & Middle Andaman District to provide immediate relief to workers affected by a major fire at the Labour Barrack of the Electricity Department in Sitanagar, Diglipur. According to a letter sent by the union, the fire occurred on the night of July 27, 2024, around 10 p.m., and resulted in the complete destruction of 6-7 units of accommodation.
The BKU’s president, B. Chandrachoodan, stated in the letter that the fire left the workers homeless and destroyed all their personal belongings. He urged the Deputy Commissioner to “allot alternate residential accommodation to the workers of the Electricity Department who stayed in the said Labour Barrack at Sitanagar, Diglipur immediately.”
Furthermore, the union has requested compensation for the affected workers, emphasizing the need for immediate action. “I would also request you kindly to grant necessary compensation to the affected fire victims as they have lost all their personal belongings,” Chandrachoodan wrote in the letter.
