Port Blair, May 02: At approximately 0835 hrs this morning, the Fire Services received a distress call regarding a fire outbreak. Marine unit of Fire Services promptly responded to the emergency, discovering flames emanating from the corner of the first-floor asset. Recognizing the severity of the situation, additional fire tenders from FS Aberdeen and Chatham rushed to the scene. By 0900 hrs, firefighters successfully brought the blaze under control.
The affected building, owned by RCS, houses EHL on its first floor. Unfortunately, the fire engulfed the account section of EHL, causing significant damage. However, the remaining portion of the building remained unscathed.
The dense smoke obscured visibility, posing challenges to the firefighters. Despite the adverse conditions, Fire Officer SI Saibal Sinha courageously donned a Breathing Apparatus Set to navigate through the smoke-filled room. His actions were instrumental in ventilating the area, facilitating firefighting efforts.
The coordinated operation was spearheaded by Inspector J. Varma, with support from other officers, including Inspectors S. Kullu and R. K. Singh, as well as SI Sanil, alongside dedicated firefighters. Their collective efforts mitigated the spread of the fire, significantly reducing property damage.
Preliminary estimates suggest the total property loss to be approximately Rupees 1.5 crore. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the incident.
