Shoal Bay, South Andaman, Mar 05: The delay in constructing essential infrastructure, including a parking area, at Shoal Bay 19 has become a significant impediment to tourism development in the area. The issue was brought to light by Shoal Bay Pradhan, Mr. A R Kumar, in a letter dated 27th May 2022 addressed to the then Deputy Commissioner of South Andaman District, Port Blair.
Shoal Bay 19 recently witnessed the completion of an all-weather road connecting it with the rest of the Gram Panchayat, leading to a notable increase in tourist arrivals. Recognizing the potential for revenue generation, the Gram Panchayat proposed several developmental projects, including the construction of a parking place, shopping complex, eco-friendly huts, community hall, pond (as part of the Jal Jeevan Mission), toilet blocks, and dress changing rooms.
However, executing these projects necessitates a minimum of 10,000 square meters of land. Despite efforts to secure suitable land, challenges arose due to encroachments on revenue lands earmarked for development purposes.
After multiple attempts and surveys, only 4600 square meters of land were identified, which fell short of the required area. This setback has hindered progress in initiating the proposed developments.
Despite continued efforts to resolve the issue, challenges persist. Meetings were held with relevant authorities, including the Tehsildar and Deputy Commissioner, to expedite the process. Joint surveys were conducted, and reports were submitted for further action.
However, concerns remain regarding the lack of progress in forwarding the file to higher authorities for necessary approvals and actions. The delay has caused frustration among local residents and authorities alike, as the much-needed infrastructure improvements remain elusive.
In a bid to address the issue, discussions were initiated with key stakeholders to explore potential solutions and expedite the development process. The residents of the area are now urging the concerned authorities to take decisive action to resolve the delay in constructing essential infrastructure at Shoal Bay 19, ensuring the area’s development and catering to the growing tourism demands.
