Port Blair, Nov. 10:The Legal Metrology Wing of the Department of Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs has been actively working towards the safeguarding the interest of the consumers against any unfair trade practice. On the early morning of Nov.2, 2023, the Enforcement Team of the Department of CS& CA conducted special inspection drive at several places in Port Blair against the use of tampered & unverified weights by the street fish vendors engaged in door to door selling of fish with the intent to deceive the public.
During the inspection, certain street fish vendors were found using iron weights of 1 kg and 500 g denomination which were strategically machine cut from the bottom to actually weigh only around 750 g and 350 g respectively. Accordingly, the tampered weights were seized on the spot and cases have been booked against 7 street fish vendors for use of such weights.
All the traders, especially fish vendors have been advised to use only the duly verified & stamped weights and refrain from any unfair practices which may lead to exploitation of consumers, failing which, stringent legal action as deemed fit will be initiated against them as per the provisions of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009.
Further, it is requested to all the Consumers of this UT that any information about traders involved in any kind of illegal trade practice can be brought to the notice of the Department of Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs in writing or over Toll Free No. 18003453197.
