Port Blair, Sep 20: In observing RASHRTIYA POSHAN MAAH 2023, a mass plantation drive was organized in 119 Anganwadi centers involving PRI members, Anganwadi functionaries and villagers under ICDS Project (Rural) Diglipur on 18th September 2023. This encourages people to know their roles and responsibilities in establishing Nutri-Garden in every household which would yield healthy fruits and vegetables contributing in saving money, consumption of pesticides free food, reduction of illnesses and improvement in overall health and well-being. On the other day on 19th September 2023, a demonstration drive in planting saplings of fruits and vegetables was organized in Anganwadi Centre, Subashgram WT in coordination with Department of Agriculture, Diglipur, in which Agriculture Assistant demonstrated the methods of sowing seeds of vegetables using vermicompost. The term vermicompost is a natural process whereby earthworms convert waste materials with rigid structure into compost. The compost produced is used as a natural fertilizer for enhancing plant growth, instead of using harmful pesticides and fertilizers for plants. Vermi compost is a great option which is safe for the environment and every household can have its own vermicompost pit which is easy to handle, safe and cost-effective. Staff from the Department of Agriculture stressed the importance of using organic manure in developing safe fruits and vegetables for the community. During the event staff from, ICDS Project (Rural) Diglipur discussed the aim of celebrating RASHTRIYA POSHAN MAAH at Anganwadi Centres, Gram Panchayat and in offices throughout the month covering all aspects contributing to a healthier community.
