Port Blair, Jan 11: Two days training programme on “Production Technology for Vegetable Cultivation in Coastal Degraded Area” was conducted by NAIP in association with ORC of CARI supported by NABARD at Diglipur for the farmers from Laxmipur, Madhupur and Keralapuram from 3rd to 4th January, 2013.
At the outset Dr. S.K. Zamir, Senior Scientist and Coordinator, ORC sensitized the farmers on the technologies available with CARI for cultivation of vegetables which can taken up by the farmers as a livelihood enterprise. He also informed on the rampant use of chemicals by the farmers in the vegetable which should be avoided. They should contact the Department of Agriculture, KVK and CARI for getting information on the right use of insecticide for the crop. Dr. A. Velmurugan, Head Incharge, NRM and CCPI of the NAIP dwelt in length on the different technological intervention like BBF and Pond Based Vegetable system which will be the apt model for growing vegetable and getting additional income in degraded soil.
He also answered to the quarries raised by the farmers on the different aspects of land, soil and nutrient management. A total of 30 participants attended of which 16 were female and 14 male. The team also visited the field of the farmers at Madhupur, Laxmipur, Swaraj Gram and Subhash Gram. At the end a technology folder for degraded coastal area was also distributed. The programme was conducted under the plan and guidance of Dr. S. Dam Roy, Director, CARI.
