Mayabunder, August 10: The residents of Mayabunder are grappling with consistent and disruptive power supply, prompting former Pramukh of the Mayabunder, Mr. Abdul Siddique to voice his concerns in a letter to the Deputy Commissioner of North & Middle Andaman, Mayabunder.
In his missive, Siddique highlighted the distressing fact that power supply in the Mayabunder area has been persistently interrupted in short intervals over the past few days. Numerous residents reached out to him, seeking clarity on the frequent power disruptions that have hampered their daily routines.
According to Siddique, the power house located at Panighat, Mayabunder, near the Austin bridge, is managed by a mainland-based private company named M/S Mona DG Set. This company operates using four generator sets with a cumulative capacity of approximately 4000kV. The main engine, a 1500kV generator set responsible for supporting power supply from Chainpur to Mayabunder, has been non-functional for over a month, resulting in a severe power deficit.
Siddique pointed out that the company failed to maintain a secondary backup engine of similar or higher capacity, a necessity to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the Mayabunder area. The company has been attempting to manage power distribution using the remaining three generators of lesser kV capacity, leading to unstable power supply throughout the region.
“The lack of precautionary measures and the ongoing power supply disruptions have significantly affected the residents of Mayabunder, including students, patients, and the general populace,” Siddique stated in the letter. He further emphasized that the repercussions of the power outage have extended to various sectors, including businesses, banking, and government departments.
Many households have reported damage to electronic appliances due to the erratic power supply, adding to the growing concerns among the residents. Given Mayabunder’s role as the headquarters of North & Middle Andaman District, the issues have broader implications for the entire region.
Siddique’s letter urged the immediate intervention of the Deputy Commissioner to address this critical issue. He requested the prompt repair of the 1500kV DG set at Panighat Power House and the arrangement of an alternative backup engine with equal or higher capacity. These measures are necessary to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the residents of Mayabunder, he added.
