Port Blair, Aug 06: The World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) is celebrated as a global campaign every year from August 1 to 7, 2023 to highlight the importance of breastfeeding and to protect, promote and support breastfeeding for improvement in health of babies and mothers across the country.
The theme for the celebration this year is “Enabling breastfeeding; enabling environment for breastfeeding mothers and to emphasize role of breastfeeding in reducing child mortality, improving nutrition, and enhancing childhood development”.
The Directorate of Social Welfare has dedicated the month of August to the celebration of breastfeeding with a series of activities. ICDS Project Nicobar in coordination with the Health Department conducted an awareness programme on World Breastfeeding Week at Chuchucha AWC for promoting importance on exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months and continued breastfeeding for at least two years. 22 mothers participated in the event with their children. Similarly, under ICDS Project Urban a sensitization programme/event was conducted at Delanipur AWC. The event included a comprehensive live demonstration on various safe baby holding techniques.
