Port Blair, Dec21: The two-day workshop of People’s Linguistic Survey of India on the linguistic diversity of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, held at JNRM concluded today with six more resource persons presenting their papers on languages spoken in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
In the first session of the day Dr. R.N. Rath, Principal, MG College, Mayabunder read out a paper on the Nicobari Language prepared by Dr. Mrs. Nirupama Rath. Shri Francis Xavier, HoD English, JNRM presented a paper on the Great Andamanese Language. Dr. RVR Murthy, Associate Professor in Political Science made a power point presentation on Telugu as spoken in the Andaman Islands.
In the second session Shri Patrick Ekka, Assistant Professor, Hindi presented a paper on the Chota Nagpuri languages spoken in the Islands. Dr. S.K. Biswas presented a paper on the Bengali Language. Shri Zubair Ahmed presented a paper on Malayalam as spoken by the Moplah community in the Andamans.
Prof. Ganesh Devy, Chairman PLSI and Prof Vishvajit Pandya, eminent anthropologist addressed the gathering and shared their views on endangered languages and the means to preserve them. A large number of students and faculty members of JNRM, and four representatives of the Great Andamanese tribe attended the workshop and took part in the discussions. Both sessions were chaired by Mrs Pearl Devdas, Associate Professor in Geography, JNRM. The workshop ended with vote of thanks proposed by Shri Francis Xavier.
