Port Blair, Feb 03: The Indian Coast Guard has apprehended a Myanmarese fishing boat with ten crew members for illegally fishing in Indian waters near Andaman and Nicobar islands. According to sources, the boat was apprehended at Narcondam Island after being sighted by the Coast Guard during a maritime surveillance mission.
The boat, which was first sighted by a Coast Guard ship, did not respond to very high frequency (VHF) calls and tried to avoid apprehension with evasive manuevers.
However, the Coast Guard ship intercepted the boat and found it to be of Myanmarese origin and engaged in illegal fishing in the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
The boat and its crew members were escorted to Port Blair on Friday afternoon and handed over to the CCS of Andaman and Nicobar police for further investigation.
The illegal fishing activity by the Myanmarese boat in Indian waters is a violation of maritime laws and the authorities are taking strict action against such activities.
