Port Blair, Jan 29: National Girl Child Day entails a huge significance in promoting and creating awareness on the rights of girls. This day is celebrated to raise awareness in the society about gender based discrimination. The Department of Social Welfare is committed towards the welfare of girl children and in order to promote awareness about rights of girl children, a series of programmes were organized from Jan 18 to 24 at Balika Niketan, AttamPahad. Resource persons from Health Department, AYUSH and Employment Exchange interacted with the children and sensitized them on issues like menstrual hygiene, nutrition, prevention of drug abuse, yoga & healthy living, Child Rights, POCSO Act besides workshop on career counseling & vocational guidance. Health-camp and various indoor-games were also organized for the girls of Balika Niketan in which they enthusiastically participated.
The weeklong celebration culminated on Jan.24 on the occasion ofNational Girl Child Day with colorful cultural programmes presented by theInmates of Balika Niketan. The Director (SW), Mrs.Iti Agarwal who was the chief guest motivated the children to work hard and build up their confidence by following the righteous path and showcase their talent in their respective field of interest. Prizes were also distributed to the winners of various competitions, a press release from Directorate of Social Welfare said.
