Port Blair, Nov 30: The CBI, SPE, Port Blair Branch registered a criminal case on 29.11.2012 against Mr. Benedict, Accounts Officer, O/o Joint Controller of Defence Accounts, Buniyadabad, Port Blair, for demanding a bribe of Rs. 20,000/- from an employees of the Naval Ship Repair Yard, Port Blair who had retired and the bribe was for passing and making payment of his pensionary benefits. The employee of the Naval Ship Repair Yard, who is the complainant, had taken VRS on 30.10.2012 and pensionary benefits to the tune of around Rs.3.00 lakhs were due to him but were held up by Mr. Benedict till his demand was made. The demand of the bribe was initially was Rs.30.000/- which was brought down to Rs.20.000/- by Mr. Benedict. The residences of Mr. Benedict at Port Blair and also at Mumbai were simultaneously searched and incriminating evidence was seized.
The CBI team headed by the Inspector caught Mr. Benedit red handed on29.11.2012 at around 0815 PM at his residence at Lillypur while demanding and accepting the bribe and the tainted money was recovered from his possession. Mr. Benedict has been arrested and will be produced before the Special Judge, A&N Islands, Port Blair on 30.11.2012.
The trap was the result of the SMS campaigning launched by the CBI for the general public to come forward and lodge complaints against public servants demanding bribe for doing official work.
