Port Blair, Jan 13: For the past one month the residents of Little Andaman are suffering heavily due to a shortage of LPG cylinders, causing immense problems to the residents. Villagers alleged that the supply of LPG Cylinders is negligible against the growing demands for LPG cylinders in the Island and this gap in demand in supply is a serious cause of concern.
While many have to borrow LPG cylinders from others, a few others have to pay extra to get a cylinder in case of urgent need. There are many others who have now shifted to cow dung cakes and woods for cooking, villagers alleged.
When Andaman Sheekha contacted a senior officer of the Revenue Department, Little Andaman he said that in December 2021 he received 1969 LPG Cylinders, which were distributed to eligible beneficiaries.
Last year in October 2021, he received 2000 LPG Cylinders and distributed the same. Later in November 2021, he received 1400, which was again distributed to beneficiaries, he added. He claimed that soon a cargo ship, with around 2050 cylinders will reach Little Andaman by next week, and the demands of people will be fulfilled.
However, the officer accepted the fact that there is a growing demand for more LPG Cylinders among the public, which is much more than the number of LPG cylinders actually reaching Little Andaman Island. Residents of Little Andaman are now demanding immediate intervention of the Chief Secretary in this matter.
