Port Blair, Dec 04: Three-day training on “Rainwater harvesting and water management” for the farm women of Bachrapahad village. The training was inaugurated by Dr. Y. Ramakrishna, Principal Scientist and Head, ICAR-KVK, CIARI, Port Blair. In his inaugural address, he stressed the need of effective management of soil and water resources of the island for enhancing the production and productivity of various crops and livestock. He elaborated the need of water harvesting and their efficient application. Dr. B. K. Nanda, SMS (Agri. Engg.), Course Director of the training program elaborated the design of various water harvesting structures and their economics and also discussed about the prevailing climate change and its impact on the fragile ecosystem of these islands.
He urged the trainees to follow the various techniques involved in creation and management of water resources structures for various land forms suited for island ecosystem. Dr. N. Bommayasamy, S.M.S. (Agronomy), Dr. Pooja Kapoor, S.M.S. (Home Science), Dr. Thanmai Paul, Farm Manager of ICAR-KVK, South Andaman also delivered. A total of 30 nos. of trainees are benefitted. The training was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Eaknath B. Chakurkar, Director, ICAR-CIARI, Port Blair.
