Port Blair, Nov 14: Amway India has announced the second edition of Amway Andaman Marathon in collaboration with Andaman Chamber of Commerce in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The objective behind organizing the marathon is to spread awareness about health and fitness among people and to present it as one of the most beautiful & environment friendly global tourist destinations.
Christened Amway Andaman Marathon- the annual Sporting event of the islands is being presented for the second year for the sports and fitness enthusiasts as well as the tourists in the emerald island. The marathon, promises to be the annual sporting event for the people of Andamans, is scheduled to be held on 18th November,2012 in Port Blair, the capital city of Andaman Islands. Amway Andaman Marathon is a joint initiative of Andaman Chamber of Commerce and Amway India where Amway is the title sponsor of the marathon.
Rahul Bose, Noted film actor, social activist and Rugby player will continue to endorse the Amway Andaman Marathon as the brand ambassador for the second year as well.
Announcing the second edition of Amway Andaman Marathon, William S Pinckney, MD & CEO, Amway India commented in a message from Delhi, “We are delighted to reiterate our commitment to bring back the Amway Andaman Marathon to the city of Port Blair. Last year the inaugural edition of Amway Andaman Marathon evoked huge response with participation from over 850 sports and fitness enthusiasts from the islands as well as international tourists from across the globe. We hope that this year also it would elicit more response from the people and the sporting event would generate a keen awareness for running, fitness and the benefit of healthy way of life among the people of Andamans. Amway has been supporting Marathon, the annual sporting event across the world with an objective of popularizing the sports among common people and healthy lifestyle. We hope this marathon would continue to an annual sporting phenomenon in the islands that would allow people of Andamans to adopt running as an enhancement to their own lives.”
The marathon is also endorsed by Athletic Association of Andaman & Nicobar and supported by Directorates of Education , Youth Affairs & Sports. Buoyed by the success of last year’s inaugural marathon, The second edition of the Amway Andaman Marathon will also introduce Half Marathon ( 21 km) for professional runners besides retaining the 10Km marathon for professional runners as well as sports lovers and fitness enthusists. There will be both Men & women’s categories in both the categories. Besides there will be two sub categories in the 10km marathon for the senior citizens where men above 50 years of age and women above 40 years of age will be participate. marathon. Winners and runners up in all categories will be rewarded with cash prize, medal and certificates. Senior citizens can also run the Amway Andaman Marathon and win prizes in respective categories. There will be total 18 winners ( first, second and third prize winners) in the second edition of Amway Andaman Marathon. The total prize money for the winners has been raised to Rs 6.6 Lakh in the second edition from Rs 2.5 Lakh last year. The marathon is expected to be attended by 1000 participants that would also include participants from army, navy as well as international runners from countries like Kenya.
Rahul Bose along with Mr. William S Pinckney, MD & CEO of Amway India would flag off the Marathon in its current avatar of Amway Andaman Marathon in the wee hours of morning of 18th November from the historic cellular jail in presence of top brass officials from the Andaman administration and senior officials of Andaman Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Athletic Association of Andaman & Nicobar.
