Port Blair, Nov 05: Massive shortage of linemen in almost all the site offices of Electricity Department across Andaman and Nicobar Islands, is always a major challenge for the Department and a serious cause concern for the general public.
Several media houses in past have highlighted this issue again and again and worst sufferers are the villagers of remote villages, who allege that during any fault the concern site offices take too much time to resume power supply due to shortage of linemen.
There are also reports that in some site offices DRMs are being used in the place of linemen, which is causing more confusion and delay in work.
Now to address this issue the Electricity Department is planning to promote well trained and qualified mazdoors to the rank of linemen.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha Daily the Superintendent Engineer of Electricity Department, Er. Ajit Bernard recently said there is shortage of nearly 20 to 25 linemen in the Electricity Department and to deal with the situation the department will initiate the process promote some Mazdoors to the post of linemen. However he said at present he can’t commit about the timeline for completion of this process.
People from Baratang and Billiground have been demanding for posting of more Linemen in their region since a long time as some Linemen in these regions have retired while from are in late 50s.
