Port Blair, Mar 10: Mr. Kuldeep Rai Sharma, Member of Parliament, Anda man & Nicobar Islands had taken up the important issue of starting Post Graduate courses like MD, MS., M.Ch. in Andaman and Nicobar Island Institute of Medical Sciences (ANIIMS), Port Blair with the Union Cabinet Minister, Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Harsh Vardhan.
Mr. Sharma in his letter to the Union Health Minister mentioned that the inclusion of these Post Graduate courses will result in specialized health services in to the remote places of Andaman and Nicobar Islands since there is lack of medical facilities and students who wish to pursue a postgraduate degree have to apply for universities in other parts of the country.
Mr. Sharma demanded for sanction of Post Graduates courses in Medical Colleges of Andaman and Nicobar Islands from 2020-21 which will result in doctors to take PG courses in areas such as Opthalmology, Cardiovascular, Neurosurgeon, Nephrology and other areas of medicine. With the sanction and commencement of these courses, the medical services in Andaman and Nicobar Islands will improve due to presence of specialist doctors who pursue their PG in Andaman and Nicobar Islands and particularly for medical students in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
In response to the letter from Mr. Sharma, the Union Health Ministry examined the matter in consultation with the National Medical Commission (NMC), the apex body for regulating medical education.
“However, NMC has taken a note of the need for Secondary and Tertiary care facilities in Andaman & Nicobar Islands and has assured that as and when the college applies for PG courses, the Commission will. duly process the same as per Regulations,” the Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan wrote in his letter.
