Port Blair, Feb 09: Dry Season is always hard for entire Kadamtala region of Middle Andaman, due to absence of a proper dam. During the month of March, April and May people of Kadamtala region witness severe curtailment in water supply.
During late 70s APWD had started construction work of a Dam at Kadamatala near No. 3 check post of Jarawa reserve, which was complete in early 1980s. But as the Dam was not successful, yet another dam was constructed over the same nallah in 1990s but to the utter dismay of people, even the second dam had serious problem of leakages.
Interestingly the second Dam was repaired multiple times but the leakage problem could not be solved and hence one check dam was constructed to collect water from leakage area.
Although the dam is presently being used for supply of water in Kadamtala region but according to local public leaders due to leakages the dam can’t hold sufficient water for a long time and hence the Kadamatla region faces water scarcity every year during summer.
According to report, even from February, APWD is supplying water only once in three days in Kadamtala region and one can only imagine what will be the condition in March and April 2021.
Public of Kadamtala region demand immediate measures to ensure that sufficient water is supplied to people Kadamtala region by the APWD during dry season.
Public also demand desilting of Kadamtala dam to increase the storage capacity of the dam and also immediate step to construct a new dam in Katla nallah of Kadamtala, which is believed to be a bigger water body than the existing dam.
