Port Blair, Oct 18: World Food Day is celebrated every year throughout the world on 16th October in honour of foundation day of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in 1945. The theme for this year is “Agricultural cooperatives – key to feeding the world”.
The Department of Agriculture in association with Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) has organized World Food Day with pomp and gaiety in the Panchayat Hall, Subashgram, Diglipur. The programme was graced by lighting the lamp by the dignitaries’ viz., Dr. Vivek Kumar, Assistant Commissioner, Diglipur, Shri. Singaram, Pradhan, Subashgran Panchayat, Smt. Pramila Singh, lawyer, Smt. Shabana, SHO, Kalighat and Smt. Sahaya Baby, Food Inspector, CHC, Diglipur.
Earlier Shri. Ramesh Kumar, Deputy Project Director (Agri), ATMA welcomed the gathering and explained the objectives of World Food Day. He encouraged the farmers to pay more attention towards the crop with much food value and nutrition rather the crop used for masticator purpose. Further he emphasized the theme of this year and urged the cooperative to contribute more towards food production and marketing.
Dr. Vivek Kumar, Assistant Commissioner, Diglipur the chief Guest of the occasion advocated the importance of each grain of food in the present world where millions of people are starving with hunger. He also pleaded the rural populace to pay more attention towards quality of produce with the increase in productivity.
Shri Singaram, Pradhan, Subashgram Panchayat as Guest of honour, encouraged the efforts of Agriculture department for conduct such worthy programmes and appealed the mass to take most benefit of various schemes being implemented by the department.
The highlight of the function was ‘Rangoli competition’ with agricultural produce with special emphasis on food grains, pulses, vegetables, fruits, spices etc. In which altogether 12groups and SHGs participated. The groups of Smt. Susheela, Smt. Ammu, Probhati SHG and Smt. Rajeswari, bagged first, Second, third and fourth prizes respectively. Whereas, all the other participants were given consolation prizes. The programme concluded with prizes and certificate distribution. Vote of thanks given by Smt. R.Bhu Bharthy, Agriculture Assistant.
