Port Blair, Oct 10: The Andaman and Nicobar command, popularly known as ANC today celebrated its raising day at Port Blair. The celebration commenced with solemn parade and impressive fly past by at the Naval wharf, The Commander in chief, Lt Gen N C Marwah reviewed the ceremonial parade and took the salute.
Speaking on the occasion, Lt Gen Marwah called upon the forces to continue maintaining the high standards through professionalism and devotion to duty. Highlighting the importance of joint operations by different forces to achieve the task, he said the command proved its effective role in safeguarding our maritime boundaries including 30% of exclusive economic zone of the country, besides carrying out search and rescue missions and anti poaching operations on high seas. He revealed that the command has been successful in apprehending 387 poachers last year and 126 poachers this year through effective surveillance and untiring efforts of its personnel. Besides, about 300 precious lives were saved at sea though timely rescue operations.
He further said the command is fully prepared to lend its helping hand to the civil administration to meet out any eventuality in this high seismic zone. He informed that two major disaster management exercises and a large number of mock drills were carried out by the command this year. To strengthen the bond of togetherness with the local people, the command organised multi speciality special camps in the remote islands, besides beach cleaning, tree plantation drive and other social activities, he added.
He said the security cover has been strengthened all along our coast line with the commissioning of naval air station INS Baaz in our southern most border at Campbell bay.
Later, addressing the media the Commander in Chief categorically stated that the military developments in the nearby Myanmarese Coco Island is not posing any security threat to us. He said the unified armed forces here are fully prepared to meet out any challenges in our territory.
The Andaman and Nicobar command was commissioned in the year 2001 as the nation’s lone unified command in the after math of Kargil conflict, as recommended by the Kargil review committee. (PIB)
