Port Blair, Sept 16: The Coast Guard Region (A&N), as part of International Coastal Cleanup Day 2012 organised an impressive beach cleaning effort in an unfavorable weather conditions on 15 Sep. 2012 at Carbyn’s Cove beach with an aim to spread the awareness of imminent necessity to protect the beaches for safe environment. Tatrakshika, the Coast Guard wives welfare association has also associated with the event and actively participated in large number.
Coast Guard has been coordinating and conducting such events every year, under the aegis of United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and South Asia Co-operation Environment Programme (SACEP). Simultaneous Coastal Cleanup drive was also undertaken at designated beaches of Diglipur, Campbell Bay, Mayabunder and Hut Bay by respective Coast Guard stations and designated Coast Guard Ships. All Coast Guard personnel, families and children participated enthusiastically in the event at Carbyn’s Cove.
The Regional Commander Coast Guard, Inspector General VSR Murthy, President Tatrakshak Medal, Tatrakshak Medal, Commander Coast Guard Region (A&N) graced the occasion and expressed gratitude to the volunteers present for the noble cause. He urged the children to spread good experience and lessons learnt, to friends and fellow students at school. He further stressed that Coastal Cleanup drive is just a message for the efforts required to save our fragile environment. However, only the awareness amongst people can make the difference.
During cleanup drive large amount of trash was collected and disposed off through assistance of Municipal Corporation of Port Blair.
