Port Blair, Apr 14: Hundreds of residents of Andaman and Nicobar Islands are stranded in various parts of India due to the lock down, imposed since 25 March 2020 by Government of India. Worst hit are those patients and students, who are now struggling even to get proper meal.
A group of stranded passengers at Chennai now have written a letter to the Prime Minister of India and demanded his urgent intervention in this regard.
The groups wrote that nearly 50 to 60 people are stranded in Chennai presently adding that “we are facing lots of hardships belong alone without any support system in Chennai, physically away from family and friends, the conditions under lockdown seems to be less encouraging.”
“It is a humble request to you to take genuine interest on humanitarian basis for us and an evacuation must be arranged at the earliest through air route as many patients in this group have undergone major surgeries and treatments & are on strict diet and under convalescence. It would be really challenging for them to undergo 3 days long sea journey without any advanced emergency medical help nearby. As a recommendation, a chattered flight can be considered or a defence plane with similar capacity to airlift can be made available this time as special case. We do understand the worries of Islanders and the dilemma faced by the administration about the chances of coronavirus spreading. If proper preventive measures can be initiated before , during & after our journey , it will allay the fears to a great extent. Corona testing of all these stranded passengers at airport before and commencement of the journey and once we reach Islands, a compulsory institutional quarantine can be imposed for all passengers,” they mentioned in the letter.
However, it is learnt by Andaman Sheekha that in Kolkata, New Delhi and many other states several hundreds of more such Islanders are stranded, who are now requesting immediate evacuation.
