Port Blair, Apr 09: In less than 90 days, Covid-19 has become a global pandemic of proportions, never witnessed before. The economic meltdown invariably has devastating effects and the lock down has severely affected daily wage earners.
To reduce the struggles of individuals and families experiencing livelihood and food insecurity as a result of Covid-19 shutdowns, Andaman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), and Rotary Club of Port Blair in association with South Andaman District Administration are undertaking distribution of dry ration. These packages include Atta, Lentils, Pulses, Sugar, Tea, Washing Soaps, Bathing Soaps, Toothpastes, And Spices. Alongside, Rice, Potatoes and Onions are being contributed by the District Administration.
In the South Andaman area, 1000 packets have been distributed through the District Administration. An additional 2000 packages without Rice/Onions/Potatoes is being supplied by the Chamber and Rotary Club directly. Of this, 1200 have already been handed over in the Port Blair municipal and surrounding areas. A further 800, will be provided to the less fortunate, residing in areas from Baratang, all the way to Diglipur.
The first batch of 120 essential packs were distributed on 3rd of April in Mahaveer Nagar, Bhatubasti, in the presence of Shri Abhisekh Dey, District Commissioner, South Andaman along with Past Presidents of ACCI, Shri Mohamed Jadwet and Shri G Bhasker.
