Port Blair, Apr 26: On 25.04.2019, information was received in PS Car Nicobar that a Hodi boat (Caneo) with 22 local fishermen from Malacca village on board was sinking 500m off Malacca jetty. On getting this information, SHO PS Car Nicobar Inspr. Abdul Arif along with his team consisting of SI Calvin, ASI Simhadri, HC/K.K Singh, HC/PratapTigga, PC/ Sanjay Paul, PC/Thirupathi and PC/Akbar Ali rushed to the jetty and with the help of local villagers initiated rescue operations. Police Constable Faithful with the help of a villager Shri Anthony who was on a small hodi rushed to the sinking canoe and handed over a rope with which canoe with all persons on board could be safely pulled out to the shore. Both of them showed exemplary courage to save the people.
After local enquiry it was found that the canoe was taken to the open sea for trial and capsized as a result of turbulent sea conditions.
All 22 members were safely rescued and given immediate medical aid. Moreover, all villagers were advised to exercise caution while venturing into the sea especially during pre mansoon season, in a release Superintendent of Police, Nicobar District said.
