Port Blair, Jan 31: All arrangements for conducting the Andaman Marathon 2019 on 3rd February, 2019 is going on in full swing. The Lt. Governor Admiral DK Joshi, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, NM, VSM (Retd), A&N Islands has kindly consented to flag off the event from the historic Cellular Jail on Sunday the 3rd February, 2019 at 0515 hrs. and also distribute the prizes to the winners at 0730 hrs. at the Netaji Stadium.
The objective of Andaman Marathon is to put the Andaman Islands in the global tourism map and also to promote and create awareness for a healthy life-style and Swatch Andaman. Andaman Marathon has eight categories consisting of four events – Half Marathon (male & female) open to all Indian National; 10K – male & female (for Islander only); 10 K for seniors – male & female [men above 50 years and women above 40 years] (for Islander only) and 10 K Boys & Girls [between 14 & 18 years](for Islander only) at a total prize money of Rs.8.70 lakhs. The definition of Islander for this purpose would be residents of the Islands including people who are posted/working or studying in these Islands.
The event is being organized in association with the Andaman & Nicobar Administration, Department of Sports & Youth Affairs, PBMC, District Office, Police, APWD, Health, Education, Shipping, Transport, Information Publicity & Tourism, Electricity and A&N Command.
This year we are expecting more than 1500 participants. The Brand Ambassador Mr. Rahul Bose and Major D.P. Singh who is a retired officer of the Indian Army will also be participating in the flag off at 0515 hrs. as well as the award function at Netaji Stadium at 0730 hrs. Major DP Singh is a Kargil War veteran and is known as the India’s first blade runner. The event will be covered live by Doordarshan & All India Radio.
All registered participants will be provided with kits consisting of T-Shirts & Bibs with RFID Chips. RFID chips will enable the participants to know the exact starting and finishing timings and also can get the Certificate through our website: www.andamanmarathon.com by typing the bib number. RFID mats will be provided at the starting point, finishing point and en-routes at various places. The participants completing the event will also be provided with medal, light refreshment & certificate. Drinking water arrangements have been made en-route at various places. Ambulance with Para medical staff have also been arranged en-route. The kits and other facilities have been provided to the participants at a very subsidized rate to encourage participation. The bibs and kits for the runners can be collected from Netaji Stadium on 2nd February, 2019 from 8.00 AM to 5.00 PM.
The route map for “Half Marathon” is Cellular Jail, Water Sports complex, Girls School, Corbin’s Cove Beach, Austinabad, Prothrapur, Bathubasthi, School Line, Dairy Farm, Junglighat, Goalghar, Delanipur, Phoenix Bay, Syndicate Bank, Marine Hall, Gandhi Statue, Marina Park, & Netaji Stadium 2nd Gate. The route map for “10K/10K Seniors/10K Boys & Girls” is Cellular Jail, Water Sports Complex, Clock Tower, Model School, Bengali Club, Goalghar, Delanipur, Teal House, Van Sadan, Chatham, Foreshore road, Phoenix Bay Power House, Marine Hall, Gandhi Statue, Clock Tower, Marina Park, Netaji Stadium 2nd Gate. For the convenience of the participants, Directorate of Shipping will be providing special ferry from Bambooflat to Chatham/Phoenix Bay at 4.00 AM and the Directorate of Transport will be providing special bus services from Shoal Bay/Mannarghat/Wimberlygunj to Bambooflat and from Ferrargunj to Port Blair and from Chidiyatapu/Wandoor to Port Blair and from Chatham/Phoenix Bay to Cellular Jail on 3rd February, 2019.
All citizen of Port Blair are requested to participate in the Andaman Marathon 2018 and also encourage/cheer up the participants while passing through the route and to attend the prize distribution ceremony at Netaji Stadium on 3rd February, 2019 at 0730 hrs, as said in a press release by Girish Arora, President.
