Port Blair, July 20: A large number of students who wish to pursue higher education in the A&N Islands have to go to the mainland on account of limited college seats in the colleges of the Territory. There has been persisting demands from the general public, various Associations, and students of A&N Islands for increasing the seats in various Under Graduate Courses in the Islands, especially in Jawaharlal Nehru Rajkeeya Mahavidyalaya, Port Blair.
Keeping in view the increase in number of students passing out in 12th Class, the Administration, at the directions of the Lt. Governor, has been pursuing with Pondicherry University, to which all colleges in the UT are affiliated, for permission to start the second shift in JNRM from the academic year 2012-13. Pondicherry University vide its letter dated 19th July 2012 has conveyed in-principle approval for starting the second shift for six Under Graduate Courses in the academic year 2012-13.
The University has permitted the College to proceed with the admission process for the six non-practical Under Graduate courses to be conducted in the second shift by ensuring existence of required qualified faculty and other infrastructure facilities, subject to ratification by the Academic/Executing Councils of the Pondicherry University. The six under graduate courses which are proposed to be started in the second shift in the college are B.Com, B.A. English, B.A. Political Science, B.A. Economics, B.A. History and B.A. Hindi, with an intake of 60 students each.
Principal, JNRM has been instructed to finalise the exact modalities for starting the second shift.
