Port Blair, July 29: A meeting of the workers of trade unions affiliated to the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) was held at Port Blair recently in which the issues going to be highlighted during the forthcoming Jail Bharo Andolan on 9th August, 2018 and Parliament March on 5th September, 2018 by mazdoors, farmers and agriculture workers throughout the country, were discussed.
Addressing the meeting, veteran trade union leader from Tamil Nadu and Politburo Member of the CPI (M) Mr. G. Ramakrishnan said that the Narendra Modi government is demolishing various worker-friendly legislations to deprive the workers of their legitimate benefits which they were enjoying all these years.
He said that the NDA government is bent upon to privatize almost all the public sector undertakings at the behest of corporates. The government failed to fulfill the assurances given to the countrymen during the last Lok Sabha elections. He said that the BJP’s promise of depositing 15 lakhs rupees in the bank accounts of each citizen out of the black money lying in foreign banks, has proved to be a hollow promise.
Mr. Ramakrishnan said that thousands of farmers are committing suicide in the country every year and the government has no policy to help the farmers during their distress. Referring to the situation in the islands, Mr. G. Ramakrishnan said that all democratic forces should come forward to fight against the BJP and also to introduce democratic governancet in the islands.
Mr. KG Das, Secretary, CPI (M) A & N State Organising Committee, while speaking on the occasion, briefly explained the corruption prevailing in the islands and the failure of the government to contain it. He said that Administration has failed to implement even court orders which are in favour of the workers. Mr. B. Chandrachoodan, General Secretary, CITU, A & N State Committee explained in details the issues on which campaign programme is under way throughout the country at the calls given by the central trade unions against the anti-working class policies of the central government. A large number of workers and employees – both from government and private sector – attended the meeting. Mr. M. Boominathan, President, CITU presided over the meeting.
