Port Blair, July 24: The Baratang Tourist Fiber Boat Owner’sAssociation has threatened to go for Chakka Jam at Baratang Islands of Middle Andaman on 04 August, against the reported move of Andaman’s
Administration on putting a cap on number of tourists arrival at Baratang Island somewhere around only 420. Baratang Islands is known for breathtaking limestone caves and also for Mud Volcano and Parrot Island and during season nearly 1500 tourists visit the Island on daily basis, around which local economy of Baratang Island revolves.“Recently we have come to know about the move to limit not more than
420 passengers in a day for Baratang Fiber Tourist boats. We are not in favour of the same because we have more than 110 Fiber boats plying here at Baratang Island and if this happen, only 42 Boats will get
work in a day, and other about 68 boats will suffer heavy loss,” Mr. G Sanju, Secretary of Baratang Tourist Fiber Boat Owner’s Association said today. He added that this carrying capacity formula of Administration will also hit those 300 odd local youths hard, who are operating tourist vehicles from Port Blair for Baratang on daily basis. “Hundreds of people have taken loan for Fiber boats and tourist
vehicles and if this restriction comes into force, they will go bankrupt” said Mr. G Sanju. Meanwhile the Baratang Tourist Fiber Boat Owner’s Association has also written letter to the Lt. Governor of A & N Islands and requested his intervention. Meanwhile, on this issue and several other issues related to Andaman Tourism, the Island Tourism Federation will hold a press conference today, which also might go for a protest on next Wednesday.
