Port Blair, May 20: World Honey Bee Day was celebrated on 20th May 2018 in a befitting manner by organizing an awareness programme at Coconut Plantation Chitrakut in Rangat Zone with the theme “Save Honey Bees”.
Ms. T.Saravana Kumari, Pradhan, Gram Panchayat, Nimbutala was the Chief Guest and inaugurated the programme. In her inaugural address she appealed all the farmers to adopt Bee Keeping as a subsidiary enterprise which would not only give honey but also increase their crop production manifolds.
The officials of Agriculture Department explained in detail the aspects like types of Bees, Etiology, Role of Honey Bees in Agriculture, Honey Bee Rearing, Product and Bi-products of Honey to the participants of the programme. An exhibition pertaining to Honey Bee rearing appliances and Honey products was also held. A practical season on methods of bee keeping was also organized. A quiz competition for participant school children was organized and the winner were rewarded with prizes. At the last a video on Bee Keeping was shown to the participants.
Earlier welcoming the chief guest and the participants Ms. Navasakthi, Agriculture Officer, Rangat applauded the scope, prospects, importance of Honey Bee, need of observing World Honey Bee Day and this year’s theme “Save Honey Bees”. Altogether 30 farmers, 8 school children, 2 PRI members and 10 officials of Agriculture Department participated in the programme.
