Mr Debraj Sarkar, a resident of Diglipur who is posted as a ward attendant at CHC Diglipur was on his duty as usual in the afternoon. Suddenly on hearing a nursing sister’s panic screams, who was raising alarm about a fire at new medical ward entrance, Debraj immediately ran towards the staircase of New OPD, where electric meter was on fire.
Within no time he switched the changeover to neutral and cut the power supply. After that he took the dry powder Fire Extinguisher and pressed to the target and cut off the fire. He learnt the fire extinguisher operation in recent Lt Governor’s visit to Diglipur by the Fire personnel.
After that he tried to inform the fire service through his mobile calls were not able to connect due to poor network of BSNL.
It is learnt that later he went to fire station in the ambulance and informed about the incident. Immediately a fire tender reached and inspected the spot. Meanwhile the Electricity department was informed about the accident and staff on duty reached the spot immediately after verifying installed a new electric meter.
Fire service officer informed that due to overload of the power and defective wiring the Electric meter caught fire. As per reports after two hours of power interruption at the hospital the power resumed again.
