Neil, Nov 22: Hundreds of resident of Neil Island today staged protest in front of the Neil Primary Health Centre this morning after a patient namely Soumitra Baba, a class XII Student, died onboard Speed Vessel after he was referred from the Neil PHC to GB Pant Hospital, Port Blair.
The residents of Neil Island alleged that due to negligence of the Doctor and delay in sending the patient to Port Blair, the patient died on his way to G B Pant. As per reports, the patient was admitted in the Hospital on 19th November, 2017 following severe stomach pain but as the condition of the patient was not improving he was referred to the GB Pant Hospital for further treatment today but unfortunately when the Speed Vessel reached near the Ross Island the patient died.
As soon as the matter came to the knowledge of the Neil Residents they immediately staged a protest in front of the PHC Neil alleging that the cause of the death was late referral of the patient by the Doctor who treated the patient at Neil Island.
The protest continued till late afternoon and when the higher authorities at Port Blair assured the protestors that they will change the Doctor by tomorrow and send a new Doctor to the PHC Neil, the protest was called off.
However, insiders in the PHC Neil told Andaman Sheekha that the patient was suffering since last seven days and he came to the hospital on 19th November when his situation was already critical. As per report, the Doctor didn’t refer him then just to stable the condition of the patient for a ship journey upto Port Blair. The Police unit of Neil Islands did wonderful job in controlling the mob.
