Port Blair, Sept 17: The Indian Coast Guard, A&N Region organized International Coastal Cleanup day under the aegis of ‘Swatch Sagar Abhhiyan’ at Corbyn’s cove, Janglighat, Marina Park and Wandoor beaches today. About 1000 school and college students, NGOs, NCC cadets and Coast Guards personnel alongwith their family members participated in this drive. Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Secretary lauded the Indian Coast Guard Region A&N for their dedication and commitment towards their duty and selfless services for the people of the Islands. He further emphasized on the protection and preservation of this extremely important environment. More so, in the case of A&N Islands which are bio-diverse & sensitive and reminded gathering that as we are surrounded from all sides with ocean, therefore harmony with the ocean is important to all of us. Chief secretary further stated that A&N Islands being emerging tourist destination, the initial step towards increasing tourism should be to protect the environment and the responsibility for the preservation and protection of the environment lies with the citizens of the Islands and reiterated the support of the A&N Administration support towards efforts of environmental conservation.
Inspector General KR Suresh, Commander Coast Guard Region (A&N) also informed about the importance of organising the event and significance of having clean beaches and sparkling water for advance development of these Isles. He further stated that the Indian Coast Guard is conducting coastal cleanups in 7 different stations from Campbell Bay in the Great Nicobar to Diglipur in North Andaman alongwith four beaches/seafronts at Port Blair.During this drive a total of 2500 kgs of trash was collected from all beaches of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, a CG communique said.
