Port Blair, June 27: Indian Coast Guard conducted a Beach Clean Up drive at Marina Park beach on 25 June 17 towards Government of India flagship programme “Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan”. The service has been effectively contributing not only towards the Prime Minister’s visionary step of Clean India Campaign but also has taken steps towards ‘Swachh Sagar Abbiyaan’ wherein measures have been put in place for keeping our oceans clean. As a part of Swachh Sagar Abhiyaan, Indian Coast Guard (A & N) would be undertaking clanship of beaches at Andaman & Nicobar islands on a weekly basis wherein not only efforts would be put in to make the beaches clean but the events would also be utilised to sensitise locals/ tourists of the importance of Clean India Campaign.
Event was conducted from 1530 to 1730 hrs by Indian Coast Guard Ship Vishwast wherein approximately 200 mtrs of beach was cleaned and about 400 kgs of garbage collected which was further handed over to PBMC for disposal. The time was selected during low tide so as to have maximum area of beach available for cleaning. In addition, approximately 50 mtrs of wall was distempered to provide aesthetic look. The event was witnessed and applauded by locals and tourists alike wherein the drive culminated at 1730 hrs. During the drive the banner and placards were also displayed to sensitize the visitors to not to pollute the pristine beaches of the islands. The Indian Coast Guard Region (A & N) is poised to realize the goals of the ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” and more such events are planned to be conducted in the future at other beaches.
