Port Blair, May 21: Under the guidance of Director General of Police, Shri Rajesh Malik, IPS, Andaman and Nicobar Police organized “Healthy Baby Contest” on 19/05/2017 at NGO’s Mess, Police Lines, Port Blair in order to bring awareness and to inculcate health and nutrition habits for the children of police personnel, at an early age, for a healthy living & good lifestyle. Ms.Ruma Malik, President, Police Family Welfare Association was the Chief Guest on the occasion. She distributed prizes to the winners in various categories of the contest. The event was organized by Police Family Welfare Centre under the close supervision of Ms.Usha Rangnani, IPS, Superintendent of Police (AP). The event was not just about judging the babies based on their health, it was also about parenting. The aim was also to promote health consciousness among parents on different factors affecting the health of children and detecting ill health & sickness at early stages and also to promote personal and friendly interaction among parents and child experts and benefiting from their tips and suggestions.
Ms.Ratna, Head of Department of Pediatrics, G.B.Pant Hospital, Port Blair, Ms.Sangeeta Chand, Principal, Govt. Girls Senior Secondary School and Ms.Ranjana Gulechha, Principal-cum-Secretary, Mahatma Gandhi International School graced the occasion by becoming members of Screening Committee for assessment of babies. Over 200 people including participants, parents and others attended the event. The selection of healthy baby was done according to their physical and mental growth, complete immunization and general appearance of the child and parent’s knowledge about childcare. Over 50 children under three categories participated in the programme. The categories based on age were – from 0-6 months, 06-12 months and 01-03 years. Apart from prizes in three age group categories, the participants also won prizes for sparkling eyes, stylish hair, most active baby, most attractive baby, healthy skin, sunshine smile and chubby cheeks. Further, consolation prize was also given to every child who participated in the contest.
Apart from choosing a healthy baby, the judges have also talked to the parents about parenting. Parents were asked about basic issues related to their children and educated them about parenting tips, immunization, vaccination and taking care of their child normal growth.
