Port Blair, May 02: The Centre of Indian Trade Unions celebrated May Day, the international working day today the 1st May, 2017 by organizing various programmes throughout the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The main programme was held at Port Blair where the May Day procession began from Crusade House premises at Phoenix Bay at 4 p.m.which after making a round of the town culminated at Tiranga Park. Addressing the gathering at Tiranga Park, Shri B. Chandrachoodan, General Secretary of the CITU A & N State Committee dealt in brief the history of May Day and recalled sacrifices of a large number of workers of Chicago who had laid down their lives fighting for the demand of 8 hours duty and urged the workers to continue to fight against the anti-working class policies of the NDA government. TS Sreekumar, General Secretary, Non-Gazetted Govt. Officers’ Association while addressing the gathering emphasized the need to have a broader movement of the working class in the islands. Shri M. Boominathan, President, CITU, A & N State Committee presided over the meeting. Hundreds of wokers and employees, among them a good number of women workers, participated in the May Day procession at Port Blair.
In the morning, CITU flag was hoisted by the workers of Peerless Hotel in front of the Hotel complex where Shri B. Chandrachoodan, President of the Peerless Resorts Employees Union addressed the workers.
At Diglipur, the May Day procession was taken out at Diglipur bazaar which culminated in a public meeting. Hundreds of workers participated in the May Day procession. The programme was led by Shri Madan Mohan Das, Secretary, CITU Zonal Committe. Shri Ramjeeban Sarkar and Dilip Sarkar and NGOs’ Association leaders Shri Gopal Dey and Shri S. Arumugam addressed the public meeting. At Mayabunder, a huge May Day procession was taken out at Mayabunder bazaar which was led by Shri Sathyanarayan, Vice President, CITU A & N State Committee. At Rangat, the May Day procession was taken out at Rangat bazaar. Shri Adaikkan, Shri Natarajan, leaders of Non-Gazetted Govt. Officers’ Association and Shri Karuppaiah, Secretary, ASNVMS addressed the gathering.
At Kadamtala, the May Day procession was taken out under the banner of CITU at Kadamtala Bazar. Smt Shipra Paul, CITU leader led the May Day procession. At Baratang, the May Day procession was taken out at Baratang bazaar which was led by Shri Jayakumar and Shri Daniel Aint of the Baratang Forest Workers’ Union and Smt Gulshan Bibi (ASNVMS).
May Day processions was taken out at Havelockwhich was led by Shri Kameshwar Rao of ASNVMS. At Little Andaman, the May Day procession was taken out at Hut Bay Bazar which was led by Shri Kalimuthu (Vanvikas Karmachari Sangh) and Shri Rajesh (ASNVMS). At Car Nicobar a huge May Day rally was taken out at the Headquarter area which was led by Shri Vishwa. At Nancowry, the May Day procession was taken out at Kamorta which was led by Shri Elaya Raja (ASNVMS). May Day procession was taken out at Katchal which was led by Shri Rakesh (ASNVMS). At Campbell Bay, the May Day procession was taken out at Campbell Bay bazaar which was led by Shri Dandapani of ASNVMS.
