Port Blair, Apr 23: The congress unit of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, has urged the Port Blair Municipal Council to review and drop the parking fees in city.
In a letter to the Chairperson of PBMC, Kuldeep Rai Sharma the president of Pradesh Congress Committee said that the private firms who have been awarded various sparking lots in city are charging exorbitant fees from public.
“To avoid traffic anarchy in the town the Port Blair Municipal Council constructed developed parking places at different locations in the municipal area and the general public visiting the markets at various places for their day to day purchases use to park their vehicles in the nearest parking places in the town.
Since the present Council handed over all these parking places to private agencies by conducting public auction and these agencies are now levy exorbitant charges for parking vehicles in such parking places which causes much inconveniences to the general public,” said Kuldeep Rai Sharma.
He added that in the absence of shopping complexes in Port Blair, for their necessities and requirements, the general public have to visit different markets places at distant places in the town for which they have to park their vehicles in different parking areas and have to pay parking fee at each and every parking place.
“Resultantly the general public are compelled to park their vehicles, both four wheelers and two wheelers, on both sides of the roads in all busy roads which causes traffic chaos,” he added.
Kuldeep urged the Chairperson, PBMC that the decision of the council to levy parking charges be reviewed and dropped in public interest.
However, he added that there is no harm if parking fees is levied on tourist vehicles since such charges will be ultimately recovered from tourists by the travel agents.
