Port Blair, March 23: An expecting mother from Port Blair’s Japan Road area of Dairy Farm reached G B Pant hospital with labour pain on 15th March. Much to the dismay of the lady, although doctor visited her on 15th and 16th March but on 16th she was given discharge from hospital, claiming the pain to be a ‘false call’. Doctor at G B Pant asked the expecting mother to come to hospital on 3rd April for delivery i.e. after more than two weeks.
But to the utter shock of the entire family of the expecting mother, Mrs Nandini, she experienced severe labour pain after only three hours, she was discharged from Hospital.
Thanks to old and experienced ladies of the locality, who came forward to help the mother. Considering the fact that there is no time to take her to hospital, the ladies managed delivery of child at her home.
Although delivery is a normal process and since ages people had delivery only at their home, under the guidance of experience elders of the concerned area but even Doctors believe that delivery, which might lead to complexity anytime, should be carried out only in hospitals, under guidance of doctors.
“It is always safe to have a doctor around during birth. Even after birth there are formalities of giving vaccination to baby and aware mother about family planning etc,” said a doctor who doesn’t want his name to be quoted.
It is normal for doctors to fail to predict the due date by 2-4 weeks but sending back a mother having serious labour pain, is unacceptable, a resident of the area said. Thank God in this case both mother and baby are safe but what if something would have gone terribly wrong?
People of Andaman and Nicobar Islands had witnessed far worse cases of negligence in G B Pant Hospital and there were dozens of protest in past but it seems things are not changing for the good.
