Port Blair, Feb 06: ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, (CIARI) North and Middle Andaman organized a three-days training programme on ‘Protected cultivation techniques for off season production of vegetables & flowers’ from 02nd to 04th Febuary,2017. The training was made successful by the active participation of 20 staff members from different (Agriculture, forest and farmers friends).The training was inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Pradhan, Basantipur. In the inaugural function PRI members of Basantipur gram panchayat, Mr. S.C Majumdar Principal of Higher secondary school, Swadesh Nagar and Dr. B. L. Kasinath, Senior Scientist and Head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Nimbudera. The scientist from CIARI, Port Blair. Dr.Ajit Waman and Dr.Pooja Borha were present. The pradhan in her inaugural speech urged all the participants to acquire knowledge which will help for help in field use among the departmental staff. Dr. B.L. Kasinath elaborated the importance and scope of protected cultivation in our islands and explained low cost rain shelter techniques for off season vegetable cultivation.
In the beginning, Mr.Debabrata Basantia , SMS (Horticulture) briefed about the objectives of this training programme and informed the importance and need of protected cultivation for high value crops under this Island ecosystem. He also emphasized on different type of protected structures and different crops suitable under protected cultivation Dr.Ajit Waman, Scientist emphasized the importance of different Plant Propagation methods and different crops suitable under use protected for Scientific nursery management techniques in horticultural crops and forest trees. Dr. Pooja Borha,Scientist explained in detail about scientifically management of tissue cultured plantlets and their methods of hardening of tissue culture saplings. Er.Manoj Kumar delivered lecture on different types of protected structure and its different construction method and materials used for protected structures. Dr.B.L. Kasinath Sr.Scientist &Head enlighted the importance of low cost rain shelters for cultivation of off season vegetables and different disease and pest management in vegetable crops. Mr.Tanmai Pual farm manager also taught different soil and nutrient management measures in protected cultivation. Dr. Sailesh Kumar,SMS(Fishery) described the need of good quality different irrigation in protected cultivation.
In the valedictory session Mr. Dillip Kumar Assistant Director (Agri.) emphasised the need for protected cultivation in the Island and success can be achieved through better scientific knowledge. The overall training was organized by Debabrata Basantia SMS(Horti.) under the supervision of Dr. B. L. Kasinath and guidance of Dr. S. Dam Roy, Director, ICAR- CIARI, Port Blair.
