
Port Blair, Dec 15: The young scientists of the Govt. Model Sr. Sec. School Port Blair have returned after representing India in the ‘World Tsunami Awareness Day held in Japan on 25th Nov 2016. The active participation of Islands’ boys and the guide teacher Shri Chanchal Dey(PGT) was applauded much. The working model ‘Disaster Saver’ developed by the team drew attention of the foreign scientists. The Secretary Education Smti Tanvi Garg and the Principal of the school Dr. Dheeraj Kumar have congratulated the team.
Islands’ team had left on 21st Nov. for Delhi and from there after completing formalities the group of 5 students and guide teacher Chanchal Dey left for Japan in the mid night of the same day. On the flight to Delhi from Port Blair, the Hon’ble Member of Parliament Shri Bishnu Pada Ray after knowing about the achievement of the group, showered his blessings and assured for any kind of help in Delhi. He was delighted to know that the team has developed a model ‘ Disaster Saver-A life saving kit’ which had already represented the Islands in the National Science Congress which was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi at Masoor in Jan this year. The model was very much appreciated by the Senior scientists of the Nation and abroad. The MP was happy to learn that earlier to this event the model also took part in the 42nd Jawahar Lall Nehru National Science Exhibition held at Ernakulam, Kerala in Dec last year, where the Chief Guest Ex-ISRO Chief Dr. R. Radha Krishnan was very much impressed on seeing the creativity and sensitivity of the young Islands’ Scientists who put their efforts under the guidance of their guide teacher Shri Chanchal Dey to find some solutions to survive during deadly natural disasters like Tsunami.
The team after reaching Japan, had to participate in the World Tsunami Awareness Day programmme at Miyagi, Japan on 25th Nov 2016. The Guide teacher Shri Chanchal Dey explained about the principle and working of the model ‘ Disaster Saver-a Life Saving Kit’ through audio Visual demonstration. He was interpreted in Japanese language also. The presentation was covered in the local television channels. Next day one of the students of the group J. Rakesh of class X presented the model at Kuroshio. The effort of the group in developing the working model on Disaster saver was appreciated by all the present scientists of the world. The Junior Scientist explained about the process of making of the model and said that the deadly Tsunami of 2004 had forced them to think about some solutions to survive in the disaster like situations. Later the historical declaration of the conference was announced. All the 30 participating countries agreed to adopt the declaration. The declaration spells out that all the participants should strive to propagate the ways of saving mankind from disasters.
They took pledge through adopting the declaration that they will offer help to others at the time disasters, instead of receive help from others. They will carry out activities to make people aware about the rescue and safety measures, to ensure disaster risk reduction. The students taking part in the summit declared officially that by discharging duties of youth Ambassadors, they will continue to make their best effort to understand the risks and effects of Tsunamis, to pass on their predecessors’ experiences and knowledge of disaster mitigation and risk reduction to future generations and to save people’s lives from Tsunamis and other hazards.
Earlier before the declaration statement, in general meeting of the countries’ representatives, Japan has given its major four ideas in respect of disaster reduction risk whereas India has given idea about the model and volunteered to develop its indigenous model ‘Disaster Saver-a life saving kit’ and to prepare people to adopt socio-psycho therapy and physiographic division. Chille has proposed to devise mechanism to prevent disasters. Around 246 young high school students from 30 countries attended the programme.
The Islands’ students did not miss the chance of visiting the places where the mechanisms for the disaster saving were established. They interacted with the Japanese students also and exchanged their views.
