
Port Blair, Dec 2: Prof Jagdish Mukhi, the Lt Governor of A&N Islands unveiled a memorabilia to mark the National Pollution Prevention Day at Raj Niwas on 2nd December 2016.
The National Pollution Prevention Day is observed every year on the 2nd December in the memory of all those who lost their lives in the Bhopal Gas Tragedy at Union Carbide Chemical Factory on the ill-fated night of 02nd /3rd December, 1984. On this day, public awareness is generated about harmful effects of pollution caused to the air, water and soil, due to various industrial activities and to sensitize the people to take adequate safety measures to prevent recurrence of such disasters in future.
Though, A&N Islands does not have any hazardous polluting industries. The A&N Administration has taken initiatives to harness alternative sources of energy by installation of Solar Power Plants and other renewable sources of energy for environmental security. Action is also being undertaken to ensure proper disposal of wastes including, domestic wastes and industrial discharges for keeping the Islands clean under the flagship programme of Swatch Bharat Mission of GOI.
The Lt. Governor appealed to the citizens of these islands to lend their hands in successful implementation of the GOIs programme to make these islands a better place to live in.
